If you're in the process of shopping for new kitchen appliances, you're going to want to do your due diligence first and think about the pros and cons of whatever items you're considering. Even if you're looking into something as small in size as an air fryer, it is important to be thoughtful about the gadgets you're bringing into your home.
Appliances are meant to last you for the long haul, and we're here to set you up for as much success as possible as you browse all of the different offerings on the market so that you don't experience buyer's remorse later. Below, three experts speak to six different appliance trends that they're encouraging people to avoid at all costs in 2025.
Read on, and then be sure to not make these mistakes when it's time to shop.
Purchasing Trendy Colored Appliances
This year, many people are excited about bringing color into their kitchens and are painting their walls and cabinets in fun, bold hues. As such, you may be tempted to veer away from traditional neutral appliances and scoop up gadgets in bright new colors, too—and it may seem like that cool blue microwave would be the perfect fit for your space.
However, Emma Farley, a junior interior designer at TriVistaUSA Design + Build, suggests thinking twice before going this route.
"While bold colors can make a statement, they can quickly look dated," she says. "Opt for timeless designs that offer long-lasting appeal."
Buying the Latest High-Tech Appliances
You do not need to purchase every new, high-tech appliance right as it comes out, no matter how intriguing advertisements make it sound.
"Wait until any initial issues are ironed out, and ensure they include basic, functional controls like buttons for consistent usability," Farley says.
Better yet, appliances may decrease in price after having been on shelves for a few months—or years—so you might also end up saving some of your hard earned cash by waiting a bit.
Saying Yes to Every Exciting Gadget
It's also important to be realistic about how many different small appliances you will actually use—and what you have room for on your countertops, particularly if your kitchen is feeling a bit cramped already.
"Although counter ice machines and air fryers are the great new thing to have, they tend to occupy an excessive amount of counter space," Shannon Kadwell, a kitchen and bath designer at Anthony Wilder Design/Build, says.
Ultimately, she explains, these machines may actually make you less efficient if they occupy too much of your regular prep space.
Installing Narrow Refrigerators
Sure, narrow fridges look nice and sleek, but how practical are they in reality when it comes time to store things?
Kadwell suggests skipping these appliances, noting that they may cramp your day-to-day lifestyle, since they may lack the storage to fit everything your family shops for in bulk.
Shopping New Brands
Rachel Lee, the US marketing and sales manager at Whynter, notes the importance of opting for tried and true brands versus emerging ones when shopping for appliances.
"Sure, the prices might look like a steal, but there’s usually a reason for that—they cut corners on quality, safety, and durability, which can lead to breakdowns, safety risks, and expensive replacements down the line," she says.
Not Doing Research Ahead of Time
On a related note, Lee underscores the significance of researching the appliances that you're considering before having them installed in your home.
"A well-established company follows industry safety standards, goes through rigorous testing, and actually stands behind its products with long-term customer support," she says.
Lee recommends conducting online research to gather industry-recognized recommendations that experts have taken the time to test methodically, so you know what to expect.
